The Keystone Grommet is easy to install, durable, and attractive!

Nobody likes a mess of cables on their desk, so why not hide it all under the desk, and just plug into the desk ports when you need them?

The Keystone Grommet is Designed for Everyone!

Whether you want the Keystone Grommet installed with Cat6 and HDMI ports in the boardroom table of your Fortune 500 company, or you want a Keystone Grommet installed in your office desk to conveniently plug in your headphones and desk phone, or you want a couple USB charging ports embedded in your nightstand at home, you can take advantage of the Keystone Grommet!

Why Did You Create the Keystone Grommet?

Keystone jack inserts are common in wall plates for home and office networking and audio/video setups. I was looking to install an HDMI port in a boardroom table, but there was nothing in a justifiable price range. Wall plates that could accept an HDMI keystone insert could be purchased for under $5, but for a device to attractively install an HDMI port in a table or desk was closer to the $100 range. I decided that should change!

UNIVERSAL Design Supports a Multitude of Port Types!

One great feature about the Keystone Grommet is that it accepts a large selection of different readily available keystone inserts – the same ones that common wall plates use. (You’ll just want to get them in black so they match!) Some of the types of keystone inserts available include:

  • HDMI for going to projectors, displays, or TVs

  • Ethernet (Cat6/Cat5e RJ-45) for data networks and VoIP phones (F/F or punchdown styles)

  • USB ports for keyboards, mice, smartphones, USB sticks, etc. (Type A & B)

  • Telephone (Cat3 RJ-11/12)

  • 1/8” (3.5mm) audio for headphones, mics, headsets

  • TRS 1/4” (7mm) audio for mics, amps, and guitars

  • Firewire (4pin & 6pin) for digital video cameras and external hard drives

  • TOSLINK for digital optical audio

  • Coax (F-type) for video signals including satellite and cable TV

  • S-video for video signalsBNC for video security cameras

  • RCA plugs for composite or component (RGB) video and audio

  • Binding Post (Banana plugs) in black & red for speakers

  • Fiber optics including LC, ST, and SC formats

  • Oh, and of course you can get blank inserts if you only have a need for one port at the moment.

And, as new technologies and cable types come along, you can simply unsnap the old insert from the grommet, and snap in the new style! Perhaps you’ll still be using a Keystone Grommet 50 years from now to charge your brainwave earpiece!

How can I Install the Keystone Grommet?

The Keystone Grommet fits in a round 2.5” (6.5cm) hole – so if you have a traditional desk grommet of the same size, you can simply remove it and pop the Keystone Grommet in the hole instead. If you don’t have a hole already, assuming you have a wood product surface, it’s not very hard to drill one! All you need is a drill, a bit, and it’s a good idea to use some masking tape on some surfaces to avoid splintering on the surface. I bought a hole drill set that included a 2.5 inch hole saw bit for $8 at Menards. If you’re going to be installing a lot of them, you might want to invest in a dedicated 2.5” Forstner bit though, as it will do an even cleaner job.

What does it cost?

I haven’t found a competing product available for under $50, but for our exclusive Kickstarter backers, we’re making the Keystone Grommet available for pre-order at just $9! Add $5 for shipping in Canada and USA (and if you want 3, only pay shipping once!) (See Kickstarter FAQ for global shipping.)Let us know if there are other combinations you’d like us to make available!

Where do I buy other inserts?

They are available from many retailers and online, but if there is significant demand, we will be opening an online store right at www.KeystoneGrommet.com carrying all of the common insert types in black (as well as standard short cables) at better prices than many retailers.
